My newest gadget is called “Solio Hybrid 1000″. It’s a solar powered Accu. So the sunn charges the accu in miy Solio H1000 and afterwards i can charge my iPhone, iPod, Mobile Phone and a lot more. It comes with a USB -, a USB-Mini – and a Nokia adapter so you can charge nearly every device. I bought this solar charger for our bicycle tour from St.Moritz to Wien. I hope it keeps my iPhone “alive” for three weeks.
Till now I have just charged my iPhone once with the it. But it worked great. The only critic point is the way you can check the charge status. The LED blinks 1-5x depending on the charge. I think it couldn’t be too hard to put 5 LED’s in it and show the status like the Apple notebook accu’s do it. For more info see the solio.com webpage.
For every solar power fan it’s a super gadget! Although it’s a bit expensive to import it from USA!

This week I was learning for the assessment tomorrow: “Distributed Software Systems”. So I had a lot to learn about Servlets, XML-RPC, SOAP, REST, JRI and JMS. All of them are interesting technologies and I learned a lot!
But (a big but) most of the time it’s so hard and complicated to implement them with Java. For all of them (except RMI) you need an external framework who isn’t included in the Java SE. Even JMS although it’s a technology that is specified by sun! That means for every technology you have to deal with different types of documentations, different webpages and peculiarities of every API. There is no “standard” how such things are done in the Java world. I needed a lot of time to learn all the stuff and there is almost no framework where I can say now: “wow that’s cool”. RMI is here an except too. RMI is quite nice.
For me, more and more the only reason why Java has its right to exist is its platform independence. Due to the fact that the Java framework itself is not how I expect it from a framewrok that has such a big market share (and the reasons above are far not the only ones!)
A friend of mine is developing an SMS application called “Luscious SMS“. I use this application not just because he made it but rather because it is a super application to send SMS from your mac.
The advantage over all other SMS applications is that you can send SMS over every service you want. So I use it with the Swisscom plugin to send SMS over my Swisscom youth account. But if there isn’t a plugin for your service you can use the service from treeinspired for 0.10€/SMS (the app has a built-in store) or develop your own plugin with the nice and easy to use “Plugin Designer”. If you chose the latter one you can send SMS over the service of your choise and share the plugin to the community.
Luscious SMS supports also some communication with your Mobile Phone. You can synchronize your SMS from Luscious SMS with the SMS’s on your phone. A disadvantage in this part is the missing support for the iPhone. I wish i could sync the notes from my iPhone with them on Luscious SMS
And finally it convince wit a nice Apple Mail like GUI.
You can get Luscious SMS here: http://www.luscious-sms.net/

Now I’m using the iPhone firmware 1.1.3 for almost three weeks. Now it’s time to write a short blog post about it.
It’s definitely the best update since the iPhone is on the market. It has a much improved stability and it’s much faster then all prior releases. The cover flow does not anymore crash all the times! I’m very happy with the new links in your springboard feature, that’s super! The lyrics feature is pretty good when you are watching podcasts!
The google maps locate me feature is not working very good. Most time it displays a radius of over 20km. But one time it helped me actually finding a location
. Although i must say i love the paper scrolling effect in the new maps app. Please make more suggestive use of the core animation technology.
So now I’m waiting for the SDK. I have already an idea for an iPhone app but maybe it will take till summer to realize it because I will never have the time to work on it
. However I hope i can release an other iPhone tool soon. Be patient!
Recapitulatory i can say the update was absolutely worth it. Till it is so easy to update with ZiPhone (actually it’s even easier then it was on my last blog post) everybody should update!
Yesterday evening I updated to 1.1.3 (with restore over iTunes). After that I used this new tool to activate and jailbreak my iPhone.
ziphone.exe -j -a (i have bootloader 3.9, so unlock (-u) won’t work)So now lets start arrange your icons however you want and locate yourself! In e few day’s I will write about my experience with 1.1.3.

Today I was wondering if it is possible to add
support to my WordPress blog. First I got started with google and found this plugin. It needs dvipng which isn’t installed on my web-space. So I searched along for another plugin and found this one which is working great now! The installation is really simple, you need to create three directories and modify a few include paths in PHP files. Provided that you have installed latex, dvips, convert and identify on your web server.
Some examples:

or have a look at my first post with latex formulas in it.

You are on a train, in a meeting or at the auditorium and you would start your mac. Press the power button and then BOOOM… oh i hate this moments! Everyone is looking at you, thats sometimes a bit embarrassing. Now i found a solution: StartupSound.PrefPane from Arcana Research. That’s a really good utility! Thx!
